HELLO!

now that i have managed to recover a bit from the busy busy busy life that got all hooked up between all the work at wasbe, sco, home n at church... here is my chance to thank all of you! (before anyone else!)

i haven't officially say a BIG THANK YOU! to all you chaperone plus log folks out there... althought i did say that to the remaining few at esplanade after we cleared out.

For the oldbies who had and has help out, THANK YOU!! for your constant support and thank you for coming back for more rubbish fm me and the naughty kids. Hope you enjoyed it n will be back again! Really appreciate your courage and passion to come back for more!

For the newbies, a big thank you!! hope you are not scared off by this event and hope you like it and ejoyed it and love it so much that you will come back again!

I'm seriously grateful for all your help and support for this, even though i can be bossy, pushy, loud and impatient at (many) times and of cos not forgetting being forgetful. Nobody could have done it without you. Don't get it wrong... i'm not against u... its just be enjoying being a bully! muhahahhaha... of cos.. we all know that's not true, coming for such a nice person talking here! muhahaha! Moi point being... don't take it personally la!

I must say that all your effort is commenable. As Mr Atarashi was saying... its really nice to see young people working for the local band scene. It goes to show that there is hope for improvement and a better future for our band scene here! Some people out there may think it is crazy of us to be doing things and working our heads off for FREE, its important to think and rememeber the value of your work and why we're doing it!

i grew up in a band environment that has none of such nice activities or any workshops or so... if not for our seniors to bring in such opportunities, there won't be any. There are so much possibilities out there that are yet to be discovered, if there's no people who's going to show the way, they will always remain undiscovered. Today, i'm working to bring to the kids here what i was deprived of. What about you?

Jcbandfest'06 was a really great experience. I didnt know that it will turn out to be so fun and stuff... but i guess all these memories were possible because of my very very fun section RAVEL TROMBONES!

It almost seems like only yesterday that band fest started. All too quickly, 3 days flew by and in a few hours time, the fruit of our labour will ripen -the concert proper. Here's wishing everyone all the very best for the concert. Hope that you all had a good time!

Short talk: Sorry to all who are waiting for updates. It's not that your internet connection or blogger server that is slow(Though it really is a pain to post around this time as it takes forever to upload pictures.)Please back-date this post by 2 day. Thanks.

The second day was dedicated to mostly polishing of the concert reportoire. This meant having more sectionals and rehearsals. Generally a tiring day for almost everyone.

It was actually a very good day to sleep though. With persistent rain throughout the entire day, I was ~~fantasizing~~ thinking about my warm bed for almost the whole time.

I think due credit should be given to all bands, for their hard work and intensive practice. Everywhere I turn I hear someone practising their own part.Well done !

With most of the work done, Mohli caught the log team( of which I am a part of) slacking at our HQ , TR 27. After gathering intelligence that they were being spied on, they decided to act a little more busy. In our defense, we move alot of chairs on day one ok!

More tickets were also sold today, which is a very good thing. After all who wants to play to a half-empty hall?

At the end of the day, several videos were shown as the weather did not allow for games to be played.I think the one with stomp and their basketballs demonstrates how music can be found in our daily comings and goings very aptly.

With the end of day 2, only 1 day is left. 2 down, 1 day to go!

P.S: I did not make friends with noodle aunite as I ate Jap food from NTU today. It was very good.

Second Day~

We have to come early to open bandrooms and brief on the programme for the day.

First day

Band Festival 2006 started out beautifully with a bright and sunny Monday morning. Some confusion, a little administration and a talk later, chaperones attached to various bands led participants in playing games thought up by the games committee.

On the list is the evergreen taboo, a make-shift minefield, a very messy caterpillar walk and a game of trust- double wacko. Being ice-breakers, participants started out as strangers but ended up with - at the very least - the name of some other participants.

The best game that gets participants out of their comfort zone goes to Taboo. With a string of words you are not allowed to say,even describing the simplest of words can be a tad difficult. Especially in front of a small crowd.

From observation, Double Wacko is arguably one of the best games to get to know each other's name. Motives may be less than pure, though. It may be to seek revenge on the person who zonks out when your name was called causing you to become -gasp - it.

Oh...and unwitting chaperones who decided to join in the game most of time end up getting called the most.

Throughout the games, organisers not involved in the games were busy with other matters such as...

Chair arrangement for logistics personnel. I think we should have a game where participants compete to set up rooms in a certain order in the fastest possible time though. Maybe next year? Please?

Others were also kept busy with lost scores, slotting correctly printed esplanade passes , ticketing matters and other issues that pop at last minute.

With most of the administration and games behind our backs, participants were released for lunch at the nearby NIE canteen.

The hottest foodstall there seemed to be the noodle stall. ( It had the longest queue) Fortunately it did not dissapoint. Regretably, I felt I should have been entitled to more meatballs to my noodles. I only got one. Perhaps I shall go and make friends with the auntie tomorrow.

After lunch, the rest of the day was either spent playing in the bandroom as a full band or doing sectionals in the tutorial rooms.

With that came the close of day 1. See you all tomorrow!

A little about our conductors

Under the baton of renowned conductors Kikuo Atarashi from Japan, Joseph Cheung from Hong Kong and local-based Dr Alan Lourens, band members from various Junior Colleges can expect an eye-opening and fun learning experience while audience can look out for a spectrum of colourful music from different cultures and genre at this Band Festival.

Kikuo Atarashi

Having conducted the Tenri High School Band for the past 27 years, Mr Atarashi has not only taught and groomed many outstanding musicians, but has also directed the band to garner several championships for the annual All Japan Band Contest.

Joseph Cheung

Joseph, an experienced and passionate music educator, has held many leadership roles and played an important role in founding and conducting many ensembles. He been the President of the Hong Kong Band Directors' Association and has conducted numerous bands in Canada, Hong Kong, and mainland China , including the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Academy Concert Band and Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia.

Dr Alan Lourens

Currently the Pro-Vice President- Strategic of LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts, Dr Alan Lourens is a Conductor and Low Brass performer throughout Asia, Australia and the US . As conductor of the University Wind Orchestra of the University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and several ensembles of the Western Australian Youth Orchestra Association, his performances have been heard regularly on National radio. He is also active in the Brass Band movement in Australia . He has lectured and/or conducted at Indiana University , the University of Georgia, Northern Illinois University , Marshall University , Southern Illinois University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Western Australia and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
